Last year I got a 30lb tank of R134a for $69 at Advance. NOW it's $149! I found $138 at Autozone. Cheapest is Sam's club for $120 but gotta pay sales tax...

What gives? I wasn't in the business when R12 got phased out. Same thing happening to r134a?

Worldpac has R134a on sale for $99 currently. I get $12.99 a lb. Same price the customer can buy it from Autozone.

For me, refrigerant is a high profit margin item. Most cars don't hold that much of it, and I sell it by the ounce. I can't remember the last time someone complained about the price of refrigerant because in the overall scheme of things, it's an insignificant part of their A/C repair bill. We track how much refrigerant comes out of the car, and how much goes back in, and charge the customer for the difference at $1.96 an ounce.

I just bought 8 cylinders for $83 each. As someone else said WP is running a special at $99 and Keltners is $125. Sams by us is $110.

 

we charge $3 an oz.

Always curious how others do things. Do most of you have a set price or menu price for a "standard" evac and recharge for a car that comes in and the system is just not cooling sufficiently but the compressor is on? This has always been my starting point as it allows me to confirm the proper amount of freon is installed, fans working, condenser's clean, etc. I also add dye at this point, especially if it was low, giving me the ability to locate leak if necessary at a later date. I can then assess pressures and advise of condition overall and if additional service or repairs are needed.  I charge $139.95 for this service (up to 2 lbs. - extra for high capacity front and rear systems). Wondering how some of you approach it.

Oh, I know NAPA has 30lb's on sale for $99.99 but I just purchased 3 tanks from a local independent wholesaler at last years price of $79.00 but was told that prices are going up when they get their next order. Glad I saw this post as I wasn't aware that 134 price was on a significant rise. Thanks guys.

Freon is starting to go up and will continue to go up so get it now if you can from your supplier.  30lb is going anywhere from $132-$159 and forecast to go over $200. There will be limited supplies which will drive the costs up. Biden's EPA rule limiting production will drive the prices up.

Well that was a faster increase and higher than what I though after I posted that. Who was that from?

Man i bought a jug for $180 last month I guess I should've bought more but my space is limited

      It always amazes me when I hear about a technician who quits one repair shop to go work at another shop for less money. I know you have heard of this too, and you’ve probably asked yourself, “Can this be true? And Why?” The answer rests within the culture of the company. More specifically, the boss, manager, or a toxic work environment literally pushed the technician out the door.
      While money and benefits tend to attract people to a company, it won’t keep them there. When a technician begins to look over the fence for greener grass, that is usually a sign that something is wrong within the workplace. It also means that his or her heart is probably already gone. If the issue is not resolved, no amount of money will keep that technician for the long term. The heart is always the first to leave. The last thing that leaves is the technician’s toolbox.
      Shop owners: Focus more on employee retention than acquisition. This is not to say that you should not be constantly recruiting. You should. What it does means is that once you hire someone, your job isn’t over, that’s when it begins. Get to know your technicians. Build strong relationships. Have frequent one-on-ones. Engage in meaningful conversation. Find what truly motivates your technicians. You may be surprised that while money is a motivator, it’s usually not the prime motivator.
      One last thing; the cost of technician turnover can be financially devastating. It also affects shop morale. Do all you can to create a workplace where technicians feel they are respected, recognized, and know that their work contributes to the overall success of the company. This will lead to improved morale and team spirit. Remember, when you see a technician’s toolbox rolling out of the bay on its way to another shop, the heart was most likely gone long before that.
