It's Vacation Season, Take Care of Your Customer

With school ending, the focus will be on summer, and that means vacations. Meet with your techs and advisors and strategize on ways to insure that your customer’s cars are prepared for summer driving and for road trips.

 

Create and promote a “Summer Vacation Road Trip Package”. Emphasize to your customers the need to insure that their cars are road-ready for the summer fun.

 

Areas of concentration:

  • Air conditioner
  • Coolant
  • Tires
  • Wipers
  • Oil Change
  • Air and cabin filter
  • Lights
  • Fluid levels
  • Belts and hoses
  • Etc.

Be proactive today. Your customers and your bottom line will thank you.

Good advise. Promoting a “Summer Vacation Road Trip Package” gets people to be proactive about their maintenance. I wish people would prepare and plan for their trips better when it comes to their vehicles, and in my case trailers, campers etc. Since I service trailers at my shop I see it all. I get them in on a Friday, camper attached, loaded, truck full of kids all heading out of town on vacation. Only dad realizes the lights on the camper don't work so he pulls into my shop begging me to help him out. Or the guy who stops and asks why his trailers left rear tire is crooked and starting to smoke(bearings toast) and begs me to fix it cause he's also on his way out of town. Or the guy that's out of town on vacation and now has trouble. Fridays are nuts around here.

      Most shop owners would agree that the independent auto repair industry has been too cheap for too long regarding its pricing and labor rates. However, can we keep raising our labor rates and prices until we achieve the profit we desire and need? Is it that simple?
      The first step in achieving your required gross and net profit is understanding your numbers and establishing the correct labor and part margins. The next step is to find your business's inefficiencies that impact high production levels.
      Here are a few things to consider. First, do you have the workflow processes in place that is conducive to high production? What about your shop layout? Do you have all the right tools and equipment? Do you have a continuous training program in place? Are technicians waiting to use a particular scanner or waiting to access information from the shop's workstation computer?
      And lastly, are all the estimates written correctly? Is the labor correct for each job? Are you allowing extra time for rust, older vehicles, labor jobs with no parts included, and the fact that many published labor times are wrong? Let's not forget that perhaps the most significant labor loss is not charging enough labor time for testing, electrical work, and other complicated repairs.  
      Once you have determined the correct labor rate and pricing, review your entire operation. Then, tighten up on all those labor leaks and inefficiencies. Improving production and paying close attention to the labor on each job will add much-needed dollars to your bottom line.

If you truly care about people, you’ll do the right thing, and the money will come . We're not selling stuff, we're stewarding the investment of their vehicle, which is a depreciating asset. Communicating with your employees regularly. Goal alignment Stop interviewing for yourself- get other team members involved. Where could you go? Where do you want to go? What are your personal goals and your career development path? How do they align with the company's purpose and goals? Provide more opportunities for employees. It's all about knowing each other and the more familiar we are. The less unknown there is, the easier it is for us to have an honest connection with each other.
