I think on the old forum, you would be told who liked a post you made. The new style just tells you 'somebody like a post'... I thought it was nice to know who agreed with you. Any chance we can have that feature back?

yes I use to get an email alert that said "xxxxxx" just liked your post, now you only know if you look at the notifications when you sign in.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like there was more action before the change and I think the "likes" being notified through email has a lot to do with it. Don't get me wrong, love the new layout. Just so you know, I am giving you guys "likes" for bringing this up 👍

Nah, I think it is just like the business we are in, there are the ups and downs, things seem to come in waves

Strange still because if you own a shop, then it is your livelihood and you should be thinking about how to constantly make it better 24/7, maybe that's just me. Im on this forum multiple times a day trying to see if there are any new ideas or whatnot. My business has made tremendous changes since I've found this site like 3 months ago!

Sorry for the delay responding to this. That's a good call out about the likes and I will look into that.

As far as notifications, you can control them in your account settings or directly via this link: https://www.autoshopowner.com/notifications/options/

When you click into your account settings, you'll see to the right "Other settings" and then the link to Notifications. Click on what you want for notifications on the site and emails. You can do both , one, or none.

I just realized why most of you cannot see who specifically liked a post. That feature is now slated for premium and above memberships going forward. However, for the time being I've enabled it on our FREE membership package. 😁

      It always amazes me when I hear about a technician who quits one repair shop to go work at another shop for less money. I know you have heard of this too, and you’ve probably asked yourself, “Can this be true? And Why?” The answer rests within the culture of the company. More specifically, the boss, manager, or a toxic work environment literally pushed the technician out the door.
      While money and benefits tend to attract people to a company, it won’t keep them there. When a technician begins to look over the fence for greener grass, that is usually a sign that something is wrong within the workplace. It also means that his or her heart is probably already gone. If the issue is not resolved, no amount of money will keep that technician for the long term. The heart is always the first to leave. The last thing that leaves is the technician’s toolbox.
      Shop owners: Focus more on employee retention than acquisition. This is not to say that you should not be constantly recruiting. You should. What it does means is that once you hire someone, your job isn’t over, that’s when it begins. Get to know your technicians. Build strong relationships. Have frequent one-on-ones. Engage in meaningful conversation. Find what truly motivates your technicians. You may be surprised that while money is a motivator, it’s usually not the prime motivator.
      One last thing; the cost of technician turnover can be financially devastating. It also affects shop morale. Do all you can to create a workplace where technicians feel they are respected, recognized, and know that their work contributes to the overall success of the company. This will lead to improved morale and team spirit. Remember, when you see a technician’s toolbox rolling out of the bay on its way to another shop, the heart was most likely gone long before that.

      Hi my name is Zenas and I am 26 years old from Alberta, Canada. I started my own automotive repair shop in December 2023. After running it for 1 year I made a little bit of profit. I needed some advice on how I could increase it. Its a 3 bay shop with two 2 post hoists and one 4 post hoist with alignment. I am the only mechanic in the shop as I can't afford to hire anyone at this point. I am charging about $120 per hour for the labor and very minimal mark up on parts. The shop had no customer base when I got it so it took me sometime to build returning customers. If I try to increase the prices on parts the customers run away. Seems like they are calling around the city and going to the cheapest person. My monthly over head cost is about $7000. Whatever I make in a month goes back into next month's rent. Any advices on how to manage this properly from other shop owners?
