  1. Someone mentioned the local small business helpers and you asked for a bureau of some sort. Out here it is called score. Look on the Internet for small business help and you should find the local non profit that helps small start ups. Best of luck. Prepare to suffer. It helps if you expect the worse and hope for just enough.
  2. I am following this subject. Real curious to see how court goes for you. I have about ten used cars I have slowly accumulated over two years. My guys work on them when it is slow. It seems like they are unable to fix any of my cars. Each time we fix one problem another occurs. I'm getting to the point I want to send all ten to the scrapper.
  3. I do not pay them mainly because I was never paid so I never thought about it. At my last shop working for someone the training was voluntary but I'm pretty sure techs that did not go did not last long. I do pay for the training. I may consider giving them gas money How many of you that used to be techs got paid to go to a training class? Was it a dealer chain or independent?
  4. Do you work with them during the day or after your normal business hours. If you work with them during the day how are you able to set the time aside. I can not semester to get 5 minutes in row without something needing my attention unless I actually leave the shop.
  5. You mentioned in another post if I am not able to set aside time to work on the business instead of in it we may not be a good fit. Do you know of any programs that would help get me out of the business so I do have this time?
  6. I checked ked with my local big tire shop he tells me sometimes they charge 10 to mb sometimes 40.... How do I find out about paying the extra tire tax?. Elon I'm liking you more and more. Sure we can't talk after business hours when I can focus?
  7. Any idea on the cost. I am looking to send my service writer to training. I ha e to ask how much do these companies pay the employees. I see a lot of these companies employ previous shop owners. If your so good at running a shop and raking in money why would you give it up to be a teacher?
  8. I like the idea about sending them to a competition. I had a customer once try to bring his own part. I said I think the guy down the street installs customer supplied parts. Customer called a week later complaining his car had been there all week and the price went up three times.
  9. Rlo looks cool also. Looks like I will have to get on the phone for pricing seeing the handbooks on their site makes me think of one other thing I need. What do you guys do for employee handbooks?
  10. Some people have expressed concern over his age but it's only a couple of customers that I don't even like to deal with. He has enjoyed the position and seems excited to do some training. What are the cost of these programs you guys mention. I had a fellow named Elon contact me with training videos but he wants to get me on the phone before giving me the details. I don't have the time to spend on the phone listening to a script trying to find out cost and logistics. Has anyone else heard of a fellow named Elon that does training? I think I will grab that book it will be nice to hand him something he can take home. I have been training him myself so far and he improves a bit each day. He knows the service writing software and can build estimates easily. He talked to a woman from auto profit masters and said she hit all the things he feels he needs to work on. I like what I have heard from Elon so far but am turned off by the fact that he needs me on the phone.
  11. Still want to hear what people think about using tracking numbers
  12. I don't like that website. I see some basic stuff missing. I don't know about that speed test link. Your site took longer to load on my phone then mine did the first time. Why do the reviews on the website showcase reviews from 2012 first? I think you need to tel Adam to do some up dating. Do you ha e a tracking number? How many new leads is Adams website generating you.
  13. It's actually 800 a month not 1k and 200 of that goes directly to your google ad words so your truly giving kukui 600 a month. Then consider demand force is 300 a month and now your only giving kukui 300 a month. I did notice the site is a touch slow but my old WordPress site was getting slow also. I would still like to hear folks feelings on tracking numbers. And my site is live for those curious to see it.
  14. We also always feel shorthanded but I just made it one of the service writers tasks like making the coffee in the mornings. It's the last thing he does each night before he goes home
  15. We just implemented follow up. I admit I was afraid to do it earlier because I thought I would just be opening the door to more problems. Boy was I wrong. Customer really appreciate hearing from us after the repair. It has even started to generate more sales. I wish I had done it years ago. When the customer picks up the car a copy of the invoice goes into a daily folder. After one week goes by that folder gets called.
  16. Sorry for the double post. It is good to hear you guys still have e success with them. How do you guys feel about having a tracking number on your website. I am always afraid of losing a ton of customers who memorize the tracking number if I ever switch away from it. I did not give them any guidelines es for the site design. They did use a lot if my old site to make the n new one. They were in contact with me a lot so far and I made quite a few changes to their original design. My site goes live Friday morning so check it out then. Www.handsonautotech.com They said I could use my true shop number for the tracking number so I am thinking of trying to buy another number close to mine or just port over my line 2 number so if I do leave kukui years from now I still own all the numbers my customers ha e been using.
  17. I am signed up with them. My site goes live next week. Would like to keep this thread going to know how it is still working for folks.
  18. I am signed up with them. My site goes live next week. Would like to keep this thread going to know how it is still working for folks.
  19. I agree with cdhowell. My shop is very hard to find. Something most of my customers comment on during their first visit. Yet I continue to remove oil change stickers from shops on the "main strip" and replace them with mine. Before you try to convince a bank you can make it on that intersection why not try convincing yourself you can make it any where.
  20. If you think that because you have your own shop your lino repairs will be "free" that is your biggest mistake there.
  21. If anyone is willing to post interview tools/questions please do so. Also how does the saturday tech hands on test work out. Are the new hires ok with it any legal worries? Do they get paid for the day and if so how much..
