With the massive push from car makers to build more electric vehicles in the coming years, does it make sense now to install an EV charging station?  

What percentage of your current customers own EVs?  And do you have customers asking questions about EVs?

We have very few EVs here in the hinderlands and no inquiries to speak of.  However, a charging station might be an interesting idea.  However, the best concept to me would be if I were an restaraunt owner. You could offer dining and charging at the same time.

All great points, Frank. Middle America does not have nearly the amount of EVs as the East Coast or West Coast. And a restaurant of some kind, near a major highway with adequate parking may be an idea worth looking into. For me, my advice is to wait and see. Too many variables at this point.

I tend to agree with you.  Too many things are changing also, and who knows what technology will bring out in the next few years.

I own a Tesla and other than the 2,300 mile cross country trip to buy it I have ony used a charging station twice, otherwise charge at home in my own garage. The places I have charged on the trips, the charging stations mostly were either where I could walk away from the car and eat, rest room break or buy something while waiting. Having a charging station in a auto repair faculity would not benefit the shop owner nor the car owner.  Just my thoughts.

True, Tesla could change thew charging set up like Apple did.

Great points!  What are your thoughts about cities, with hi-rise apartment buildings? With tenants on the 8th floor, it doesn't seem feasible at this time to own an EV in that situation.

That is exactly why the charging stations are plentyful in larger cities. Apartment dwellers are not able to have their own charging point like a home owner or renter would. It goes back to the having a charging point where the person charging the car while having to sit in that spot for 20 or 30 minutes, or less would be able to go into a close by place to buy some food or drink. A auto service center would not be the best place for such a charging point. When i made my drive back with my Tesla I made a point to go into each local store where the charge station was and buy something, as a Thank You to them for allowing the space in their parking lots for the charge point. Many folks do the same thing when using those charge points.

      It always amazes me when I hear about a technician who quits one repair shop to go work at another shop for less money. I know you have heard of this too, and you’ve probably asked yourself, “Can this be true? And Why?” The answer rests within the culture of the company. More specifically, the boss, manager, or a toxic work environment literally pushed the technician out the door.
      While money and benefits tend to attract people to a company, it won’t keep them there. When a technician begins to look over the fence for greener grass, that is usually a sign that something is wrong within the workplace. It also means that his or her heart is probably already gone. If the issue is not resolved, no amount of money will keep that technician for the long term. The heart is always the first to leave. The last thing that leaves is the technician’s toolbox.
      Shop owners: Focus more on employee retention than acquisition. This is not to say that you should not be constantly recruiting. You should. What it does means is that once you hire someone, your job isn’t over, that’s when it begins. Get to know your technicians. Build strong relationships. Have frequent one-on-ones. Engage in meaningful conversation. Find what truly motivates your technicians. You may be surprised that while money is a motivator, it’s usually not the prime motivator.
      One last thing; the cost of technician turnover can be financially devastating. It also affects shop morale. Do all you can to create a workplace where technicians feel they are respected, recognized, and know that their work contributes to the overall success of the company. This will lead to improved morale and team spirit. Remember, when you see a technician’s toolbox rolling out of the bay on its way to another shop, the heart was most likely gone long before that.

      We need better resources for diagnosing European cars' DTC's. I'm talking about 8-12 year old models, in the prime years of major repair, that our primary tool, AllData has no information on. They may have many other codes listed for these vehicles, but not what we seem to need.  Example: 2014 MB GL450 with codes u0121-87, u0147-87, c2321, c030a, p179a-12 and several others, with symptoms of not being able to drive car, a warning of "transmission not in park, vehicle may roll" illuminating. This is for illustration purposes, but if you happen to have experience with this in particular..... We hate sending our customers to the dealership, or specialty shops. Is there better scanners.  We use for the most part AUTEL and Snap on Verus

      When we have low production, the first thing we often point to is the tech. But, is low production the fault of the tech in all cases?
      As a former shop owner, and now a business coach, I have learned through the years, that it take a team of the right people to attain high production levels. It also take effective service advisor skills, and charging he right labor times. 
      From your experience, what are the main drivers to attain high production levels, and the challenges?
