Benefits You Offer Technicians

Just trying to get a feel for what types of benefits you all are offering for your technicians. Do you all offer the following:

 

Health Benefits - If yes, 100% paid or 50% paid?

Vacation Time - If yes, how many days/hours per year?

Personal Days - If yes, how many days/hours per year?

Use of shop for personal vehicle repairs?

401K w/ Company Match?

Saturday's Off?

 

Any other benefits?

Health Benefits - yes - 50% paid, individual only

 

Vacation Time - yes - 6 national holidays after 6 months work, 1 week vac. after 1 year.

 

Personal Days - yes - 1 per quarter accrued at the end of the quarter, unused are paid at end of year.

 

Use of shop for personal vehicle repairs - yes, repairs with my permission only, free oil changes and state inspections on the car you drive to work.

 

401K w/ Company Match - yes, 2% after 1 year.

 

Saturday's Off - yes unless need to catch up in summer time.

 

5 employees normally, have had up to 9 at one time, too many issues!

 

paid training, paid ASE tests one time only, retakes they pay 1/2.

Health Benefits - yes, 75% company paid for employee medical, 100% company paid for LTD and $30K Life Insurance

Vacation Time - Yes, 5 days after 1 year, 10 days after 2 years, 12 days after 5 years, 15 days after 10 years

Personal Days - Included in vacation or PTO. If there children have something going on at school during the day we encourage them to attend.

Use of shop for personal vehicle repairs? Yes

401K w/ Company Match? SEP with 3% dollar for dollar match

Saturday's Off? Yes, we only open Mon- Fri

Paid training, paid ASE tests one time only, retakes they pay 100%. They also get paid a flat $50 for attending any training in the evening.

Any other benefits? Paid Uniforms, Bi-Weekly Efficiency bonus, EOY Bonus,

Health Benefits - 100% paid by us, entire family


Vacation Time - 2wks after 6mo of work. Holidays don't count.


Personal Days - 0, same as vacation


Use of shop for personal vehicle repairs? Yes, all our techs live a LONG ways away, so no problem after hours.


401K w/ Company Match? No


Saturday's Off? Closed weekends


Any other benefits? Great scan tools, clean environment, signing bonus, higher than average pay, uniforms, ASE tests paid.



Funny how similar we are to MARKSAS!

      I recently spoke with a friend of mine who owns a large general repair shop in the Midwest. His father founded the business in 1975. He was telling me that although he’s busy, he’s also very frustrated. When I probed him more about his frustrations, he said that it’s hard to find qualified technicians. My friend employs four technicians and is looking to hire two more. I then asked him, “How long does a technician last working for you.” He looked puzzled and replied, “I never really thought about that, but I can tell that except for one tech, most technicians don’t last working for me longer than a few years.”
      Judging from personal experience as a shop owner and from what I know about the auto repair industry, I can tell you that other than a few exceptions, the turnover rate for technicians in our industry is too high. This makes me think, do we have a technician shortage or a retention problem? Have we done the best we can over the decades to provide great pay plans, benefits packages, great work environments, and the right culture to ensure that the techs we have stay with us?
      Finding and hiring qualified automotive technicians is not a new phenomenon. This problem has been around for as long as I can remember. While we do need to attract people to our industry and provide the necessary training and mentorship, we also need to focus on retention. Having a revolving door and needing to hire techs every few years or so costs your company money. Big money! And that revolving door may be a sign of an even bigger issue: poor leadership, and poor employee management skills.
      Here’s one more thing to consider, for the most part, technicians don’t leave one job to start a new career, they leave one shop as a technician to become a technician at another shop. The reasons why they leave can be debated, but there is one fact that we cannot deny, people don’t quit the company they work for, they usually leave because of the boss or manager they work for.
      Put yourselves in the shoes of your employees. Do you have a workplace that communicates, “We appreciate you and want you to stay!”
