Hoffman Geoliner 550 Alignment Machine

Recommended Posts

We're about to buy our first alignment machine. We've done front-end work for years, but we've always outsourced the alignments. We're looking at a Hoffman GeoLiner 550 at the recommendation of a local equipment dealer. Has anyone used one that might know the pros and cons? Does anyone have an opinion about Hoffman equipment in general? I guess they're owned by snapon. Does anyone have any other recommendations for alignment equipment?

I have not used the Hoffman 550.

I have used SnapOn, Bear and Hunter. I have been using Hunter for the past 35 years. I would steer clear of the target/camera systems for now.

I would also recommend training. There is a lot more to alignments then just camber, caster and toe!

Where are you located?

According to our equipment dealer who would also be servicing this system, Hoffman, John Beam, and Snap-On are all made by one company. Does that sound right?

I'd like to try a hunter, but from what everybody in the area says, it's nearly impossible to get the service guys to show up. Apparently the local service and sales reps for hunter in my area have had a pretty high turnover rate for some time.

Spence, why do you say to avoid the target/camera systems?

I know Snap-on and John Beam are. I am not sure Hoffman is as well.

That may be but the Hunter equipment I have doesn't go down that often. Our guys don't treat it rough either. I've had Hunter service reps say my equipment looks less then a year old when it's over 5. Taking care of good equipment helps keep costs down and profits up,

Spence, why do you say to avoid the target/camera systems?

They have issues in my opinion. I like... no require accurate readings. I have tested both the Hunter and the John Beam/Snap-on and found them to read improperly. Surprisingly both companies have the same fault. I expect in the near future it may be corrected. Until then I wouldn't own one. Their readings also drift to much for my liking.

It's a shame but the public doesn't know this. The BIG push has been for speed in getting the so called "reading for the print out". These readings only have about 25% of what a real alignment readings should have. Marketing to the masses and they are being lead to slaughter.

With the high number of auto service places jumping at these camera machines you should be able to get a good used alignment machine at a good price. Even if you have it overhauled and made like new you'll have a better piece of equipment for less.

Hope that answered your question. If not then hit me up.

That makes sense. Thanks for the insight. We're getting bids on Hoffman machines from a couple of places and then we're going to talk to hunter. I appreciate all the advice.

It always amazes me when I hear about a technician who quits one repair shop to go work at another shop for less money. I know you have heard of this too, and you’ve probably asked yourself, “Can this be true? And Why?” The answer rests within the culture of the company. More specifically, the boss, manager, or a toxic work environment literally pushed the technician out the door.
While money and benefits tend to attract people to a company, it won’t keep them there. When a technician begins to look over the fence for greener grass, that is usually a sign that something is wrong within the workplace. It also means that his or her heart is probably already gone. If the issue is not resolved, no amount of money will keep that technician for the long term. The heart is always the first to leave. The last thing that leaves is the technician’s toolbox.
Shop owners: Focus more on employee retention than acquisition. This is not to say that you should not be constantly recruiting. You should. What it does means is that once you hire someone, your job isn’t over, that’s when it begins. Get to know your technicians. Build strong relationships. Have frequent one-on-ones. Engage in meaningful conversation. Find what truly motivates your technicians. You may be surprised that while money is a motivator, it’s usually not the prime motivator.
One last thing; the cost of technician turnover can be financially devastating. It also affects shop morale. Do all you can to create a workplace where technicians feel they are respected, recognized, and know that their work contributes to the overall success of the company. This will lead to improved morale and team spirit. Remember, when you see a technician’s toolbox rolling out of the bay on its way to another shop, the heart was most likely gone long before that.

A lifelong student of history - this episode began as a serious topic of interest for Craig - and evolved into multiple conversations with a special guest.
For our listeners, we took our time with this episode and it was reviewed with careful consideration due to the significance of the subject.
On June 6, 2024 - many of us in the free world paused to recognize a significant anniversary. The 80th anniversary of D-Day.
D-Day, also known as Operation Overlord, was the allied invasion of Normandy to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny.
There have been other milestone anniversaries of D-Day, but this year came at a very challenging time in the world and hits very differently that previous years for other reasons.
The conversation begins around why that is.
One term that was raised in one of the many articles written on the topic - was that we are losing our ‘tangible interpreters’ of the event.
The people who were there in 1944, the people that many of us knew or were even raised by, sadly, will not be with us much longer.  The knowledge of these major events now passes to those of us fortunate to know those who lived it and to take care in how we communicate these events to new generations who soon will never have the chance to meet a veteran of WWII.
To help with this topic - Craig knew the perfect guest, Evan Wisner.
When sharing an anniversary article with Evan, that article highlighted the Army Rangers DDAY operation on Point Du Huc, a conversation followed that we decided to take to the recording studio.
Craig came to know Evan and appreciates his unique experiences and expertise as they are both members of Grand Rapids Toastmasters Club#404 - joining the club around the same time in 2019.  This means - Craig gets to hear a lot of great speeches from Evan.  Since Evan is both an EQ expert as well as a veteran of the war on terror who served alongside Army Rangers, you can be certain he brings a unique perspective to this conversation that makes it very much worth listening to.
We ask listeners to take into consideration that this was a discussion focused on one major operation of a larger campaign of a greater war, and that all history, especially discussion around war, is limited, and does not tell every story, and often needs context for understanding.
