  • Two locations shut down at two different times 
  • November 2020- few cases with employees, health department quarantined everyone
  • Loss of $100,000 during shut down  
  • 18-20 employees out of 40 total have tested positive in 6 month period- only 3 spouses have caught it   
  • Adapted with phone service from home- Jose used app on cell phone to continue to service customers and shuttle vehicles to other locations or reschedule for the future (air traffic controller) 
  • Tell customers the truth- the team is sick and you are doing everything you can. Received gratitude and understanding from customers 
  • Need to take care of the customer, each other and the business 
  • Paid all employees when shut down- had savings. Keeps cash flow of 6+ months for ‘in case of emergency.’ If you keep 8 months it can be used for opportunities (equipment or another business) 
  • Preparation is the key to survival- the business had already been preparing for possible shut down due to Covid 
  • Other locations showed ownership and caring nature for the affected employees and business owners 
  • Communication is always most important during everyday occurrences, crisis and personal life
  • Everyone is dealing with the pandemic in one form or another 
  • Freedom is on four wheels during the pandemic People are traveling via their vehicles more than ever
  • Vehicle maintenance is an investment now, not a luxury
  • Annual Christmas party (pre Covid)- over 150 peopleInvite your family and who you are closest with- Dwayne wants to meet them and get to know them 
  • Way to get team members and their family completely on board

      There is a large repair shop in the mid Atlantic states (they want to remain anonymous) that just formed an alliance with a local new car dealer to service their used cars.  I will change some of the details; a request from the shop owner. But, the story brings up a few interesting facts. And, the big news is: This shop is profiting from this relationship!
      The shop owner was approached by the GM of the dealer to service some of the used cars they have been taken in on trade and want to sell.  The dealer techs are not trained and not familiar with the different car lines, being a Chrysler-only dealership. Due to the shortage of cars these days, the dealer is taking in on trade, all makes and models and wants to sell the used cars. And we all know profitable used cars are. 
      The repair shop performs a multipoint, which they get paid for,  and then they do many of the services and repairs, which includes tires, brakes, wheel alignments, oil changes, air and cabin filters, wipers and other simple services. Most of the cars are newer cars, and the work can be done by a GS tech.
      I don't know the pricing, sorry.  But, I am interested to see where this goes.  
      Imagine, a new car dealer asking an independent repair shop to service and repair their used car fleet???

      Purpose - Raise funds and money to support and encourage technical education and training for the automotive industry through scholarships, endowments, career development and other industry inspired programs. Vehicle donations from customers that go to auction- “cars for careers” Example- transmission/engine repairs. You are able to donate a vehicle  no matter where you are, it’s not limited to only California Low overhead- about 75% of the money coming in from the vehicle donation program gets put into funds. Volunteer-based foundation. You don’t need to be a shop owner to be included in the board of trustees (tax advisor, grant writer etc) Last year they awarded 28 scholarships to 16 deserving students for a total of $23,500. To date, this is the largest amount awarded in the history of the Foundation. Schools involved - community colleges across California such as Cuyamaca College, Skyline College, Rio Hondo College, San Diego Miramar College, Citrus College, Chabot College, UTI Vetting process – Scholarships are awarded to students who fill out applications at https://automotivescholarships.com/ all applicants that meet basic requirements are then scored by a panel of automotive professionals and winners are picked from the highest scoring applicants. Opportunities to create a scholarship- John has started a scholarship with his business. He will match whatever his employees put into it. There are also one time scholarships for smaller amounts.

      For example, you could have different tiers: 

      Maintenance Lite - 15$ a month: low monthly payment for all of the conventional oil changes required by the average driver each year.

      Maintenance Basic - 20$ a month: Maintenance Basic includes everything you'll find in Lite, but adds... Unlimited Synthetic Oil Changes (as needed), On Rim (Seasonal) Tire Rotations (as needed), Complimentary Re-Torquing after changeover.

      Maintenance Plus - 40$ a month:  includes all services from Ultimate Maintenance Basic, plus the following...
      - Off Rim Seasonal Tire Rotations (as needed)
      - Seasonal Tire Storage
      - Flat-Tire Repair (excluding roadside assistance)

      Years back, customers brought their cars in to us 3 to 4 times a year for an oil change. About every 3 to 4,000 miles. That simple service gave us the perfect opportunity to inspect their car and sell needed services and repairs. It also sustained healthy car counts. Today, we see more and more customers ignoring the shop's windshield lube sticker, and willing to wait for that "Oil Maintenance" light to come on. Many times that could be over 10,000 miles on a Honda civic! This, plus the fact that car makers have been preaching to consumers that their cars need little to no maintenance, is a major contributing factor in lower car counts.  
      If shops are not taking a proactive approach and adopt a culture of total car care, shops will find it very difficult to stay profitable in the coming years. It's crucial today to educate your customers, promote preventive maintenance, perform detailed multipoint inspections on every car, and make sure you get paid what you are worth. 
      What tips to you have to be more proactive and maintain healthy car counts and a healthy business?
