No waiters, drop off only.  Golf carts need good maintenance once a year and can last up to 25 years During slower winter months and holidays- free pick up and delivery for golf carts Dealerships would rather sell new carts than repair existing Everyone learns together how to repair golf carts- recurring problems and failures is a learning curve  Built website and marketing campaign for golf cart repairs- backed up 2-3 weeks during busy summer months (golfcartdude.com) 2 parts vendors for carts (besides dealerships) Also buys and sells carts- new runs $8-10K, became difficult to purchase new or used post-pandemic Boneyard- carts get sold down to parts down to the frame, only a few in the country and people will drive hours to buy parts from them.       HYANNIS – Proponents of Question 1 on the November 3 ballot say that independent auto repair businesses need access to data collected by cars in order to fix vehicles, while opponents say that Question 1 could risk owner’s personal data as well as safety.
      If Question 1 is approved, cars 2022 model or newer must be equipped by manufacturers with a standardized, open access platform that would allow auto repair shops to wirelessly access mechanical data using a smartphone-based app with owner’s permission.
      Currently, telematics data generated by sensors in the cars is transmitted to servers only the automakers can access.
      Supporters of Question 1 say that the telematics data only being available to the manufacturer means car owners must take the car to its original automaker to receive service and make repairs, diminishing consumer choice in where they can take their cars.
      “If a person goes out and buys a car, they should own the data that enables that car to be fixed, and they should be able to choose where they want the car fixed. If shops like mine don’t have that information, then we can’t fix the car, which kind of forces someone to go to a place where they don’t want to go,” said Robert Wallace, President and Treasurer of Cape Tire and supporter of Question 1.
      Wallace said that the limits on customer choice on where they can receive service for their car will lead to a monopolization of the industry by car manufacturers, with a rise in prices and a drop in quality service.
      Wallace said that he and other supporters would be willing to purchase the data, similar to how the auto repair shops already purchase parts, and that they are not requesting that the data be made available for free.
      “We’re willing to pay for it, we just want the information to keep our customers rolling.”
      Conor Yunits, spokesperson for the Coalition for Safe and Secure Data which opposes Question 1, said that the issue of telematics is already covered under the right-to-repair-law that was introduced in 2013. 
      “It specifically says that any information necessary to diagnose and repair a vehicle that is provided to dealer repair shops and only available through telematics must be made available to local repair shops. This is already covered,” said Yunits.
      Yunits said that currently data is only sent to secure servers owned by manufacturers, then to repair shops or customers through secure systems developed with the automaker.
      According to Yunits, Question 1 would prevent manufacturers from being a part of the development process of security systems and apps that share the information in the future, sacrificing a layer of security for consumers.
      Yunits also said that Question 1 unnecessarily risks owners’ personal data by creating opportunities for bad actors outside as well as inside repair shops to access personal data wirelessly.
      While mechanics or others may be able to intercept and use the data for malicious purposes, Wallace said that is a risk that comes with a lot of modern technology, such as cellphones and other smart devices that collect data on their users, and that it is up to the customer to decide whether they want to take that risk.
      Yunits also said that Question 1 would also force car manufacturers to comply with an unrealistic timetable which would be impossible to do in a safe and effective manner, with new requirements that would be enforced as early as January 2021.

      Kirk Richardson is a young and successful entrepreneur. Born into a blue-collar, hard-working family, he was a below-average student in high school and college. At the age of 22, he left school and started his first business. He bought his first three-bay shop at the age of 24. Seven years later he bought his second shop, South Street Auto Care in Rochester, MI.
      Richardson really prides himself on his ability to create a family culture within his businesses. The culture is a blend of hard work, accountability, fun, and hi-jinx, which combine to make loyal and dedicated coworkers.       A Technician tested positive for Corona Virus and discovered on a Wednesday His shop was closed Thursday, Friday and Saturday Symptoms can’t taste food or smell (not typical) Kirk told everyone he would have been in contact or interacted with him He will require a negative test before he comes back to work Many of his co-workers were not that concerned with the virus and everyone got a dose of reality His shop went to a grinding halt. There were 13 employees involved. His first thought was to keep everyone safe There was a physiological switch in people that a co-worker got the virus (can’t happen to me) One of his first goals was to locate testing centers that could give him a quick turn-around for his team to minimize the days he would be closedHis team went in their own direction which delayed his re-opening Find a testing center that can turn results around in 24 - 48 hours if you will ever need it In some cases, it took 4 days to get results He had to find a company to sanitize the entire building  Customer messaging was also importantEvery customer was understanding  Got some test results by Sunday, but not all results were in on Monday, yet he still re-openedSome test results came in Monday  The county did call them and ask what he did to remedy the situation Kirk is a multi-shop owner. Early on when COVID-19 he created a policy that no-one could work or visit another of his location. He did not want any cross-contamination to minimize exposureHe had a breach in the policy when they transferred loaner cars, and the people from the second shop had to be tested One of the techs at the second store refused to get tested. He also said he had Cornona Virus. Be prepared for some of your people who don’t want to be tested and what you will need to do to remedy the situation Kirk is using diluted bleach for sanitizing the shop and customer vehicles Based on questions and being inquisitive Kirk believes his tech may have gotten COVID-19 from a vehicle he was working on As a shop owner Kirk has established rules to protect his people and customers. But he cannot patrol every person every minute of the day.It is important to use this example to remind your people of the important of sanitizing, social distancing and protecting yourself and others If it happens to you:Close your business Get everyone tested. Know where you are to send your people (predetermined)  Sanitize the entire operation (do your research before you have a need) Keep your plan to yourself or your manager Resources:
