  1. Hello, I am considering changing my business name as within past 6 months we have converted into mainly a truck and jeep lift kit, tire and wheel, and select auto repair and also accessories. My name currently is Defiance tie and auto. Defiance is the location. I want something more geared towards our unique specialties ( I think) so I can market this and grow.  This is simply the best profit maker and general awesome thing we love to do. Before we were working on old vehicles for pennies and now we charge premium rates for most services.  Any idea on names, experiences will be appreciated.  Website is www.defiancetire.com  and been in business 4 years

  3. Hello all, I have been working my butt off the start of 2017, how about you? Ive specifically have been working on my online prescence. Ive been on facebook, google ads, etc.. But i have not made a website for my business. Id like to be able to highlight areas of what we do, as well as inform our customers of new trends in automotive etc.. What are you currently using for website and why, and if you would want to share yours id love to see them. Thanks all, god bless and keep going

  4. Hello all, I dont post much but just curious if anyone out there is buying wholesale chinese tires and where they are getting them from, customer service etc.. I am currently getting out of the used tire business (Too many comebacks a month later for leaks or junk) so i am looking to purchase low end tires to fulfill the need for the bottom feeders that are looking for used tires. If anyone has any leads that is greatly appreciated.

  5. All the wholesalers tend to have some line of Chinese tires: Westlake, Crosswind, Goodride, etc.

I have been approached by the westlake/Nanyang but they are only a few bucks cheaper then my Mastercraft line so I didn't see the point. The original poster said numbers that made my head spin. Would love to purchase tires that cheap.
  6. Sparker, You bring up a very interesting topic, Tire Rack forced ATD into internet tire sales called Tire Buyer. I personally feel TR lost ground because of the cost of tire shipping. So to answer your question you should definetly have all options open, most will agree the tire business is lower profit than repair and maintence . I actually restructured my tire sales 5 years ago and just went to fair pricing great service , you will never win the lowest guy in town guy. You should just get a copy of the price and text or email it to your supplier. It is a game that has been played for the last 30 years. Get on a tire program if possible, I personally dont like them although it does bring some $$$$ onto the bottom line. I have been a Michelin Mast guy for 30 years. I am also on programs with Cooper , General, Goodyear and Toyo. The Michelin Mast program is argubally the best one out there. I have some serious issues with the Michelin program although unfortunetly it is the best one for the average size independent. Most all guys that have been in this business for years will tell you the tire business is one crazy business. PS / I bought 32- 205/55r16 China built tires last week for $10.71 each, the bottom line tire's have been elevated in quality, big time. After all these years I still do not understand some of the crazy things in the tire business. Good Luck

If I may ask, where did you find the china made tires at? I have a lot of customers interested in those and I do not have a source

  7. We take post dated checks all the time. Loaning money may mean never getting paid and again never getting paid after winning a judgement, but a post dated check is backed by the sheriffs dept if it bounces.

A better way is to get hooked up with a credit card company that allows you to give instant credit. There's some hoops to jump through but it gets you paid instantly and tires rolling out the door easier

I get flyers in the mail about synchrony. nobody ever contacts me.

  8. There is a software program I used in the past to do this type of business. Here is the link: http://www.notesmith.com/

Now, consider the type of customer that you will be dealing with, (there is no easy money, you have to work for it no matter what), if you have no experience chasing money, I would suggest you reconsider, such low margins on tires, and the regulatory hassles may not be worth it, but only you know your numbers and risk tolerance.

With a check hold system, You pretty much get all your money right there, you just stretch it out over a few months instead of one lump sum.

  9. To my way of thinking there would actually be less risk in financing higher margin business (i.e. repairs) than tires. On a $500 set of tires you will probably make less than $150 and the out of pocket costs may be $350. It will be an easy way to get a lot of money at risk.

There is a shop 40 miles from here. They Take a 350 set of tires and charge 900 for them stretched out over 6 months. I think its a check hold program?

  10. Okay... here is the story. I actually have 2 companies.

I started as RI Used Tire in 2008. In 2009 I began to add tires to a web site. My customers like it so much that I hired an outside source to help me design a database that I could easily add and subtract my tires online. 1 year later UsedTireShop.net was born. My software company has grown and grown and now we have tires shops all over the world using our software.

In 2014 my insurance company sent me a letter stating that I could no longer sell used or aged tires. So I switched from RI Used Tire to RI Tire and Service. At this time I was okay with it because we were under a construction nightmare and there was no way I was getting my usual 80 - 100 cars per week. There is awesome money selling used tires but you have to get at least 80 cars a week.

Fast forward to today and I am looking to change from RI Tire and Service to Primary Care Auto Repair. I hate selling new tires because of the low profit margin. I will be glad to get the word TIRES out of my name.

We are currently a value added shop. We pick up and deliver, We wash and vacuum every car and we have an impressive marketing program.

An that is my tiring life in a nutshell.

I see I was just curious because about 40 percent of my business is used tire sales. I buy them by the truck load.

  11. We stock about 400 tires and get deliveries twice a day. That's 100 sizes in stock ready to go. If you stock less than say 30 sizes it's probably a waste of space and money because chances are you wont have what the customer needs. Turn rate goal is 6x/yr or I swap in something different.

That said, I don't stock things like brake pads and spark plugs. The parts stores deliver in 20 minutes so I save my money.

We used to make $150-$200 on a set of hoops, now I'm happy to make $80-$100. Too much competition. I'll put on a set for $60 if I have to to keep that person from going down the road to a competitor (on something easy like steel wheels)

Carry out to local shops I don't make anything except the program dollars.

What program are you set up with?

  12.

Let me guess the sizes you stock: 235/75/15 and 205/70/15???????

Acctually I have a nice little surplus of those! I use LKQ often, and my rep knows im a tire shop so he always lets me get those before someone else does. They are very popular! Along with 225/50/16 for the grand ams!
