IT’S
BIGGER THAN WE ARE
The late great
Groucho Marx used to say: “I would never
join any organization that would have me
as a member.” Of course that was a joke,
but some of us try to make it all by
ourselves rather than seeking out the
help we all need from time to time.
Being alone in
today’s automotive aftermarketplace is
about as tough as it gets. Not knowing
what others with your same problems are
doing to solve them forces you to
reinvent yourself and your business
every time you are faced with a new
challenge. An industry as mature as ours
has seen and solved most every problem
that could come along. If you’re having
certain issues you can bet that many
others have had the same or similar ones
and somehow found the answers.
It can’t hurt to
share. Unless you’re giving away
information about your best customers or
upcoming special promotions to your
immediate competitors, the exchange of
information, both business and
technical, can only help us all.

help us all prosper now and in the
future. If we think we’ve seen a lot of
change in our industry over the past 10
or 15 years, it’s nothing compared with
what’s coming, and we need to be aware
of and respond immediately to each small
deviation. We don’t any longer have the
luxury of waiting for anything to get
better on its own because it won’t.
Either our industry, as a group, or the
very smart ones in it, have to adapt to
ever changing marketing and sales
techniques while becoming more
technically astute than ever.
The range of
services that we provide and the way we
market and profitably sell them to our
customers will determine our survival
and success. This is the type of
information that we don’t want to keep
secret. The more of us that sell
properly the higher we can raise the
industry standard so that we can all
make the kind of money we deserve
without having to worry about those few
low-ballers who just don’t want to get
the message.
We have a golden opportunity to brighten
the future of thousands of hard working,
dedicated automotive service providers
by sharing all the wonderful information
we’ve accumulated and will continue to
discover. Let’s help each other and our
industry. Today would be a great day to
start.
