Economic Downturns Call For More Training, Not Less!

While it seems that cutting back on everything is the right way to go during a recession, care must be taken not to skimp on the essentials of doing business. With vehicles being so much more complex these days and customers so much more difficult to manage, our skills in all areas need to be the best. We must be able to sell our work at profitable prices and then produce as close to a perfect product as we can the first time..

Looking Past the Recession

In my 25 years of automotive shop ownership I’ve lived through at least three recessions or economic downturns if that’s what you’d like to call them. They have some factors in common of which we should all be aware, the primary one being that eventually they come to an end. So there’s your silver lining; knowing that at some point the economy will normalize itself. The trick is to still be there to take advantage of the good times that will no doubt return.td>

Had a Tough Day Today? You're the boss, Get Over it!

It's 4:55am. I awake 5 minutes before the alarm is due to go off. As I stagger through the house getting ready for work, my mind fills with thoughts of what needs to be done today, what was not done yesterday, what went wrong yesterday, and ways to make today a better day than yesterday. I'm not attempting to paint a "gloom and doom, the sky is falling" image, but rather illustrate the start of how a typical shop owner begins their day.

Forums: The Power Among Us

They say experience is the best teacher. If this is so, there's probably enough information among automotive shop owners to fill a library the size of the Empire State Building. Each day, shop owners conduct business in the trenches of automotive service and repair. They make tough, real-world decisions. If someone has a question about running an automotive business, there's probably a shop owner out there who knows something on that topic. It's time we profit from this knowledge.

Talking with Terry Greenhut

Being alone in today's automotive aftermarketplace is about as tough as it gets. Not knowing what others with your same problems are doing to solve them forces you to reinvent yourself and your business every time you are faced with a new challenge. An industry as mature as ours has seen and solved most every problem that could come along. If you're having certain issues you can bet that many others have had the same or similar ones and somehow found the answers.

The Evolution of the Automotive Shop Owner

Most of us got into the automotive business probably the same way I did. We had a love for fixing cars and naturally entered into a career as an automotive mechanic. As our skills improved we looked toward the future to stake our claim in the automotive business world. We were mechanics on a Friday, working for dealerships, garages and gas stations. We became shop owners on a Monday and the world for us changed forever.

What Business Are You Really In?

If you’re like me, you probably got into the business of auto repair because of the passion you have for cars and the desire to fix mechanical things. The thrill of bringing back alive a sick engine or transmission was unmatched by any other career choice. So, eventually, after mastering the art of automotive mechanics you ventured out on your own..........

Sales Lesson

It was 1980 when I opened my shop. I rented 4 bays in a building shared with a sporting goods store. I remember one day a customer (I‘ll call him Mr. Priority) arrived and asked if we could do and oil change and a state inspection. He said he was going next door to the sporting goods store to check out the new shotguns that just arrived. It was fall, just before deer season.
